Event Announcement: Unfiltered AAJA Journalism Symposium in Tokyo
Unfiltered.coop, a cooperative of journalists and readers committed to covering the underrepresented and marginalized, and to creating a new way of reporting through independent, uncompromising, quality journalism, will hold a symposium in Tokyo on October 1.
The two-part event will focus on global reporting in the first session, and waste management technology, health and safety and environmental issues in the second session. It will also recognize journalist Nithin Coca, who, along with three other team members, won the Asian American Journalist Association (AAJA) Award for Excellence in International Reporting August, 2023.
The award was for the article, “Why workers and communities oppose Japanese incineration in Southeast Asia”. Coca and his team covered the issues that arise when Japanese waste incinerators are exported. Thai reporter Nicha Wachipaniicj and Indonesian reporter Yosepha Pusparisa also contributed to the report, and will join the symposium to talk about their approaches to international reporting in the first session.
In the second session, Tada Shuichiro and Nishimura Yoshikatsu from the Tokyo Sanitation Workers’ Union will speak alongside Kabir Arora of the International Alliance of Waste Pickers, A K M Maksud, Executive Director at the Grambangla Unnayan Committee in A K M Maksud, Executive Director at Grambangla Unnayan Committee, and Jorge Emmanuel with the Global Alliance against Incineration, about the safety of workers and communities, as well as the technological advancement of the incinerators.
The symposium will be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at the Central Library on the Yotsuya Campus of Sophia University (7-1 Kioi-cho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo). Admission is free but a donation of 500 JPY is requested.
Simultaneous interpretation is offered in Japanese and English. Participants are requested to bring their own computer or smartphone with headsets for the interpretation services.
